Super High Fidelity in a Biting Splash
The highly responsive Sabian 7″ HHX Evolution Splash delivers bright, fast, penetrating projection – and lots of it! When designing the Evolution Splash, Dave Weckl asked the Sabian Vault team for all of the bite and penetration of top-end attack, blended with the warmth of darker undertones. HHX Evolution delivered the sound, but another request for cymbals that virtually play themselves meant that Sabian lathed the Evolution splashes thinner and thinner – resulting in extra-thin cymbals that activate with the touch of a finger. Ultimately, HHX Evolution is all about Weckl’s desire for a set of cymbals that take no energy or effort to play. You don’t have to dig the sound out of these cymbals – it’s all there with the touch of a stick, a brush, or even your hands.
Weckl on Evolution
Dave Weckl has plenty to say about the HHX Evolution line: “The Evolution Splash is exactly the essence of what I used to be on the lookout for. It has that warm tone I like so much, but it also has brightness in its high end. For me it’s very important to have the right mix – a balance of both. And that’s what the HHX Evolution line is all about. It retains the low end, we’ve brightened the highs, and we’ve increased the sensitivity so that the lightest touch of a stick sets it off. But it’s not just a matter of being responsive, Evolution puts out total sound all the time; even at very low levels. That’s what I used to be on the lookout for: cymbals that offer the path of least resistance so I will focus on what I want to play, and not on how to play it. These cymbals breathe and give, yet are very sturdy. They are airy in sound yet project and punch through the band. ”
Sabian HHX – Modern Dark
Until HHX, dark cymbals simply did not cut. With HHX, Sabian changed all of that. The use of an innovative combination of high-profile shape, large raw bell and jumbo sized hammering, they ensured that the dark, tonally complex sound of HHX cuts in any situation. Essentially, they took the warm, dark, complex tone of HH cymbals and made it cut for modern musical settings. Whilst other cymbals may generate darkness, HHX stirs up more simmering heat, more musical dirt, more of what drummers want to hear – and projects it. It gets you heard. It’s just another innovative design feature, created by the Sabian Vault team.
Who Plays HHX?
Delivering simmering Modern Dark tone at all volumes, it’s little wonder HHX is played by top Sabian artists.
Hand-Crafted – Every Step of the Way
Like all Sabian B20 Cast Cymbals, the HHX Evolution Splash begins its life in the Foundry, where a centuries-old family process is used to create the most musical and durable of all cymbal alloys. Inside the Foundry, Sabian metallurgists combine carefully measured amounts of Copper, Tin and Silver, heat it to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit, and pour it into casts. At this stage, it’s hard to imagine these castings will eventually grow to be a Splash cymbal. But first, they must go on a journey that will take them through the processes of Multi-rolling for intensity, Hammering for tone, Lathing for enhanced response and projection, and a final Aging process in the legendary Sabian Vault for optimum sound. In a sense, it’s a journey that’s only complete when you play the cymbal of your choice – an evolution from idea to reality. It is this process – innovation blended with traditional cymbal-making – that made HHX an award-winning sensation when it burst upon the scene in 2001.
